At Ohma, we love pushing the boundaries of microphone design, and nothing excites us more than a custom challenge. Recently, an artist reached out with a truly unique vision: a microphone made of pure brass with a rich, green patina. Projects like this are my favorite because they combine art and problem-solving in the most creative way.
There’s something captivating about the look of aged brass—the way it tells a story, wears its history, and stands out with a one-of-a-kind personality. While natural patinas can take years to develop, we took on the challenge of speeding up this process while keeping the artistry intact.
We started by creating a pure brass microphone body, a first for us at Ohma. While we always keep brass screens in stock, building an entire mic body out of brass was new territory.
Once the body was ready, we dove into the art of patina. After experimenting with various techniques—including layering solutions of ammonia, salt, and vinegar—we found a process that worked beautifully. Over three days , we carefully applied, splashed, and layered our custom blend to achieve the exact green patina the customer had in mind.
Every layer told a new story, and by the end, the mic looked as if it had been weathered by decades of history.
To preserve the patina and protect it from wear, we finished the mic with a light rub-on clear coat. This gave it durability while maintaining the raw, aged look the artist envisioned.
This aged-brass microphone reminded us why we do what we do—to create tools that are as unique and inspiring as the artists who use them.
This isn’t the first time we’ve stepped outside the box for a customer. We’ve created microphones with custom color blends, sparkles, and even “paint-splatter” finishes. Whatever you can dream up, we’ll find a way to make it happen.
What would you customize on your Ohma mic? Whether it’s a bold new color, a unique texture, or something completely wild, we’re here to make it a reality.
